Jorge Luis

Artist Statement and Bio

Jorge was born in Cuba in 1966.  His parents migrated to the United States shortly thereafter in 1968.  He was always curious about Photography, learning what he can from a childhood friend who had his own darkroom….   “To me, seeing the images unfold before my very own eyes was always a great thrill”… He would spend hours observing and hoping that one day, he too would have his own darkroom in which to work in.  Years later, after graduating Engineering School, from the New Jersey Institute of Technology,  he went 180 degrees the other way, and set out on a mission, to teach himself everything he can about Fine Art Photography, specifically, the classic B&W Silver Gelatin process…  “I work predominantly in B&W silver for many reasons, the first being that I enjoy the pace it offers, it gives you a chance to enjoy the creative process that Photography offers.  I have a deep respect for this process, and I am in love with it, its romantic.  It has a colorful history, and I am grateful for the opportunity that perhaps in some small way, I may contribute to that history, even if its just to keep the flame going”.
Using fine art fiber papers and selective toning processes, all his prints adhere to the strictest archival processes available.

Jorge has traveled extensively and has participated in many environmental and humanity related projects where he’s had the opportunity to photograph.  His life project, Ninety Miles – an intimate journey, is an emotional exploration into his native birth place, Cuba.  Photographs from this body of work, as well as others, have been published and exhibited at various places.
